More Than Just a Marker

Almost every day after school, the Elementrees met up at Amy Lockhart’s house for one hour to discuss their plans and play games. Today, they were working on their vision boards. A vision board is a poster board that contains all the images and words that a person wants to experience in his or her life.

Amy had a big box of markers for everyone to use.

“Please help yourselves to my box of markers,” she announced publicly. She was standing on her usual stage: her backyard patio. “We do not have poster boards, so please use these blank sheets of paper instead.”

The Elementrees helped themselves to the paper and markers. They drew by placing their papers on hard surfaces such as the backs of books, each other’s backs, and the patio. Cynthia Buttons did not allow anyone to use her back as a writing surface.

“Why do they call it a ‘magic’ marker?” Tommy Tomorrow asked out loud. “Does it have supernatural powers?”

Some of the Elementrees laughed.

“It didn’t make you disappear,” Amy said with a sly smirk on her face.

Some of the Elementrees laughed again.

“The magic is that you are holding the marker at all,” Brenda Books said.

Tommy could not believe even Brenda was acting like a smart aleck now. He gave her a shocked look.

“Brenda, not you, too! Are you saying I’m not smart enough to even hold a marker!?!”

“No, Tommy, I’m saying it’s a miracle we’re even on this planet, rotating on our axis at about 1,000 miles per hour and revolving around the sun at about 67,000 miles per hour, and sitting here holding these markers.”

“Wow! You’re right!” Now Brenda was talking a language Tommy could really understand: outer space.

“This stuff doesn’t just happen from rocks randomly hitting each other, even after gazillions of years. It’s a mystery. The magic is that we’re even here holding these markers, traveling so fast through the universe.”

“Wow! I’m on a space ship already and I didn’t even realize it until now!”

Brenda nodded once and then was silent. She continued to read her book while she paused every now and then to draw on her vision board. Sometimes she drew on her vision board while she was still reading her book. Brenda had many hidden talents.

  1. One amazing so-called inanimate object in my life is my laptop computer. At this time most all of my work is created through my computer. It is my communication tool and creation tool. It also is an entertainer with all the music on YouTube.com. It is a teacher of most everything. However, I cannot believe everything I read, see, or hear on the internet. The second and third most amazing things in my life are pen and paper.
